Mimi O’Bonsawin is a contemporary roots singer-songwriter from Northeastern Ontario. Through her rhythm and story-driven songs, Mimi embraces the beauty of the land, all the while yielding to her Franco-Ontarian and Abenaki First Nation roots. In her music you will find sounds from the forest, uplifting melodies and introspective lyrics weaved with pop sensitivities and acoustic instruments. The layers of percussion and surprising harmonies make you feel the music rather than just hear it.

Mimi’s music has gained some momentum and has received various awards and nominations, including “Best Pop Album” at the Indigenous Music Awards 2019. She has performed on prestigious stages such as at Midem in Cannes, and Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto. As she writes and tours, her supporters are spread across the world as she gains recognition in Canada and India. She has shared the stage with the likes of Buffy Sainte-Marie, Crystal Shawanda, Francesco Yates, Tom Wilson and more. Mimi’s music is regularly aired on CBC, Walmart and LCBO radio, and streamed through Stingray and Galaxy, as well as on stations across Canada. Her song ‘Stone Gaze’ was placed in Showtime’s “Ray Donavon” TV Series (E1S5) and other tracks from her records are featured on APTN’s “Mohawk Girls”.

Her 2020 EP “Elle Danse” was nominated for two Trille d’Or awards.

The 2021 album “Fiddleheads and Ferns” was created to showcase the work of Mimi O’Bonsawin and Ryan Schurman as they continue to compose instrumental music for Film and TV from their Log Home Studio. An earthy soundscape album, “Fiddleheads & Ferns” has been played on CBC & DSP playlists which may be surprising for an instrumental album. It evokes story even without words and provides a unique space to listeners.
