COUP DE COEUR FRANCOPHONE DE VANCOUVER

Originating in Montreal, this event is an annual testimony to our connection to Francophone culture. Today, a number of presenters in Canada use the Coup de coeur label to refer to a series of concerts that are organized independently but are united around a common desire to celebrate the arts through francophone music and song.

Le Centre culturel francophone de Vancouver looks forward to seeing you for the 25th edition of Coup de coeur francophone de Vancouver in November 2019.

Since its beginning, many artists have come to perform at this annual event: Michel Rivard, QW4RTZ, Daniel Lavoie, Myriam Parent, Martha Wainwright, Radio-Radio, Fred Pellerin, Les Sœurs Boulay, Les Hays Babies, Anaïs and many more.

UMBRELLA

The group is led by Frédéric Blouin, a singer-songwriter-composer who discovered music when he was a student at Sherbrooke University in his early twenties, moonlighting as a singer with Freak’n’See, a group inspired by alternative rock music. With Aïdos (2004-2006), he was finally able to test his mettle with original song compositions, using his own lyrics and ideas. His participation in the Richmond (Quebec) Festi-Rock and collaborations with other artists followed and he has never stopped writing since then. The “Arbre-en-Sol” project stands as one of the great accomplishments of his career. This benefit concert for local organizations in the small region of Richmond has been produced three times between 2008 and 2010. On the West Coast, Frédéric first threw his hat into the ring as a street busker and performer in open mic nights before he launched the Umbrella group. The group presents Jacques Brel's greatest hits and recounts some of the highlights of his life. More than just a show, this is a total immersion into the heart of his life in a majestic performance by Frédéric Blouin.

Umbrella: Frédéric Blouin (Vocalist), Michelle Dumond (Piano, Guitar), Cierra DeSilva (Violin), Martin Eade (Drum Set), Steve charles (Accordeon), Jean-Sébastien Le Doujet (Electric Bass).

LES RATS D'SWOMPE

Hailing from northern and eastern Ontario, Les Rats d'Swompe are proud Franco-Ontarians who came together to share their passion for traditional fiddle music, call-and-response songs, and old-fashioned folk music. Based in Ottawa, the trio composed of Yan Leduc, Martin Rocheleau, and Patrick Pharand is one of the rare ensembles to keep the musical heritage of francophone Ontario alive. For three years now, these young but seasoned musicians have been key players in the musical composition of this project. In 2016, they released “La légende de Jos Grandbois”, a debut album with an acoustic sound that draws on the roots of trad-folk, with lyrics derived mainly from the repertoire of French-Canadian folklore. The appeal of this Franco-Ontarian group is multi-generational, so that children, students, parents, the elderly and entire families can enjoy discovering or reliving the rich musical heritage passed down to us. Since the launch of their most recent album “Vivre en ville” (Life in the city) in March 2018, the title song keeps climbing the charts on francophone radio stations across the country, hitting a number of top rankings. Having made their mark as the new wave of traditional music in francophone Ontario, Les Rats d’Swompe are returning in force with a high-octane musical performance. In a completely new formula, the trio will be accompanied on stage with exceptional musicians, delivering original compositions and covers from the repertoire of French-Canadian folklore. In a festive trad-rock atmosphere augmented with an electric guitar, a drum kit, a banjo, and a mandolin, they deliver a solid performance with its own wild and heart-warming energy.
