LOIG MORIN (B.-C)

Loig touched down on Canada’s West Coast more than a decade ago, newly arrived from his native Brittany. Nominated in the category of Francophone Artist of the Year at the 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards, he took part in the Festival d’été last year year with his last album Citadelle. Now he is back with the seventh album in his career, and his fourth to be written and composed in Vancouver, entitled Printemps. So it is also about renewal, with a short season of eight pop titles, part synthetic, part organic, punctuated with female voices — in particular that of thrice-JUNO-award nominee Jill Barber — carrying the ephemeral sadness of rainy days as well as the capricious warmth of an amorous breeze. Recorded and produced by Loig himself at his own studio Music Lab, bolstered by two nominations at the last Gala Trille Or in the categories Production and arrangements and Sound recording and mix, the album is the first in a series of four dedicated to the seasons. These are the pieces, along with some fragments of the newly announced album Automne, that will be transposed on stage at the Festival, with the contribution of the sweet and ethereal voice of Montreal singer Maude G. L., and skilled guitarist Vinay Lobo.

PAUPIÈRE (QC)

“[…] This eccentric duo invents a funny kind of music inspired by synthetic new wave at the Human League. It makes good music for loose and lanky dancing like in the Jeanne Mas clip En rouge et noir” — this was published this spring in the online pages of the prestigious Paris’ newspaper Libération playlist presented by tsugi initiates in France, on the topic of “Sade Sati”, title piece of their most recent and first LP. Julia Daigle (visual arts background) and Pierre-Luc Bégin (We Are Wolves) constitute an atypical pair for the coverage in the international specialized international press. The Canadians, all of them, the Americans (BrooklynVegan, Noisey, Popwire, KEXP and others), the Europeans (France Inter, RFI, TV5 Monde, Radio Nova, Les Inrockuptibles, to name just a few), so many of them have made enthusiastic comments documenting, often in English, their flamboyant “neo-romantic" production in French, heir to the icy sensual synth-pop of the 1980s. With stage appearances in France, at MaMa and at Bars en Trans, among other venues, Italy, South Korea and the United States, in particular virtually on SXSW Online, where they were a rising star, Paupière is more than ever ready to take up their feverish performances once again, with a kiss for everyone’s lips.
