LAURA NIQUAY (QC)

Wactenamaci. Shine light on me. This is the call, powerful, grand and beautiful that Laura Niquay makes with her deep abrasive voice that is able to fill the emptiest soul in the opening cut of her Waska Matisiwin (Circle of life), her first real album, released last spring. A sensitive and contemporary work, sung in her language, Atikamekw — and in Innu by indigenous singer Shauit on “Nicim” — with an imposing grandeur that was recently consecrated with a place on the prestigious long list of the 2021 Polaris Music Prize. A Québecois artist from Wemotaci (Haute-Mauricie, Quebec), the very first of her nation to be billed in the Montréal Francofolies Festival in 2011, winner of nine prizes at the Gala Teweikan over her career, including the Jury Prize in 2017, the singer-songwriter-composer is a quiet force, a model of resilience, a “door opener”. “Very few Atikamekw women engage as a singer the way she does. With her daring self-affirmation as a female singer-songwriter-composer and by following her dream, she is making tracks and becoming a role model for many girls and women of her nation”, as anthropologist Véronique Audet wrote about her in the Cahiers du CIÉRA (Center for interuniversity indigenous studies and research) in 2017. A tireless dedication that carries her cross-cultural folk indie music, that resonates more powerfully today than ever before.
