Born in Quebec City, Diane Tell entered the Val-d’Or music conservatory at the age of six and she composed her first songs when she was twelve. She is one of Quebec’s pioneering singer-songwriter-composers and she won six Félix awards before the age of 25: Breakout Artist, Best Artist, Best Album, Best Song and twice, Songwriter-Composer of the Year. Several of her songs were consecrated as SOCAN Classics and the song “Si j’étais un homme” (If I were a man) was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters and Composers Hall of Fame in 2017. Her album “Chimères” won the MIDEM Award, and “Faire à nouveau connaissance” won a “Victoire de la musique” award. In 1990, she was selected to play the lead role in the musical comedy “La Légende de Jimmy”. Another musical comedy role followed, “Marilyn Montreuil”, presented at the Théâtre National du Chaillot, in Paris. Not only did she perform the lead role, but she also composed the whole score for the show. An independent artist, she holds the phonographic rights to her catalog and manages her own music publishing house, in addition to producing and self-financing all her albums. On her blog “Diane Cause Musique”, she coaches emerging artists on how the music industry works.

In May of 2018, Diane Tell was elected for a three-year appointment to the board of directors of SOCAN, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.

In 2019, Diane will release a new album of 12 songs produced by Fred Fortin, accompanied by musicians Olivier Langevin, François Lafontaine, Samuel Joly, and Joe Grass.

An independent artist since 2011, Diane Tell was described by writer-journalist Slobodan Despot in L’Antipresse in 2017 as follows:

“Diane Tell is a little sovereign state in the empire of the major record labels. By the age of twenty, she had already found international fame with songs that everyone remembers, such as Si j’étais un homme.

Since then, she has stayed on course with intelligence and wisdom, writing, composing, recording, producing, promoting the high-quality songs she is known for, and she usually does her own videography as well. Beyond being a singer-songwriter-composer, she has bought out her own phonographic rights and manages her own music publishing company, independent from the major record labels. In this era of music streaming and the collapse of traditional business models in the music industry, her entrepreneurial approach is attracting attention.”

New Album

“I started by contacting the most talented artists and technical artisans I know, asking them if they wanted to work with me. They all said yes. Fred Fortin was the first, and I entrusted him with the production of the album. I had to wait until he was free, as was the case for all his close and talented musician friends. I gave them free rein. I took all the time I needed and invested in the project with all I had and nothing held back. I gave it my best and inspired by each one of them, I got magical results. Everything in this album is intentional, a conscious choice, taken on with courage and conviction. Every track, every silence, every word, the sound, the images, and I am proud of every one of my choices.”

The first track released March 22, 2019 – “On ne jette pas un amour comme ça”
