From April 28 to June 3, 2022, Le Centre will present « Drawings » an exhibition by the British Colombian artist, Anaïs Gerber. This exhibition is a collection of drawings and prints done by Anaïs Gerber since she settled on Thetis Island. Her works are variations on the theme of the sublime, this aesthetic emotion we are seized by when we sense our own minuteness in the immensity of the cosmos. The works in black and white are lithographs, in other words, prints made from drawings done on stone. With this aspect of her work, Anaïs seeks to express the poetry of the moment in all its purity, through a single rainbow of shadow and light. In her watercolours, digital prints, and coloured pencil drawings, Anaïs celebrates nature in its Dionysian luxuriance. Starry nights, shimmering peahens and flowery clearings are the stuff her eccentric dreams are made of. In colour or black and white, drawing is the primordial gesture through which the artist communicates her profound joy for being in the world.
Anaïs Gerber was born in 1983 in Paris. After taking drawing classes for many years as a child, she went to study applied arts in the UK in 2001, graduating with a Master of Art from the Royal College of Art of London in 2007. After living in Norway for a few years, she moved to Montreal in 2011, before settling on tiny Thetis Island, BC, in 2013, where she now lives with her husband and their farm animals. She trained in lithography at Granville Island’s Malaspina Printmakers studio in 2014. A true lover of the French language, Anaïs also works as a translator.
